KAMPALA, Uganda — Equity Bank Uganda has appointed Gift Shoko as its new managing director, the bank announced Monday, as it seeks to drive growth and innovation in the East African market.
Shoko, a seasoned banker with over 26 years of experience, will take the reins at the Ugandan subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings Plc, subject to regulatory approval.
Prior to his appointment, Shoko served as the executive director of Equity Bank Uganda, where he played a key role in shaping the bank’s strategy and driving business growth.
Shoko’s extensive experience in the banking sector spans multiple markets in Southern and Eastern Africa. He has held senior leadership positions, including group chief operating officer and group chief executive officer at Trust Holdings Limited, a Zimbabwe Stock Exchange-listed diversified financial services group.
During his tenure at Trust Holdings, Shoko successfully reorganized the company and led its re-listing on the stock exchange. He also served as the chief executive officer of Commercial Bank of Africa (Tanzania) Limited for five years, where he steered the bank’s growth and expansion.
Shoko holds a Bachelor of Business Studies and Computer Science degree from the University of Zimbabwe, a Master of Business Administration (Banking and Finance) from CIMA in Nicosia, Cyprus, and several certifications in banking, finance, and leadership.
The appointment of Shoko as managing director is seen as a strategic move by Equity Bank Uganda to drive business growth, innovation, and customer-centric banking solutions in the Ugandan market.
“Gift Shoko brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, and we are confident that he will drive the bank’s growth and innovation agenda,” said Mark Ocitti, board chairman of Equity Bank Uganda.
Shoko’s appointment is subject to regulatory approval, and he is expected to take up his new role in the coming weeks.
Equity Bank Uganda is a subsidiary of Equity Group Holdings Plc, a pan-African banking conglomerate with operations in six countries, including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Sudan.
