
KAMPALA, Uganda — India and Uganda held their third Joint Trade Committee meeting in New Delhi on March 25-26.
The meeting was co-chaired by Priya P Nair, Economic Adviser, Department of Commerce, from the Indian side, and Ambassador Elly Kamahungye Kafeero, Head of International Political Cooperation Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Uganda.
Ajay Bhadoo, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce, addressed the inaugural session, emphasizing India’s deep economic ties with Uganda.
“We have a growing partnership in trade and investment,” Bhadoo said. “We need to collaborate in sectors such as e-commerce, MSME cluster development, pharmaceuticals, solar energy, and rural electrification.”
A 28-member Ugandan delegation comprising officials from various ministries and Uganda’s diplomatic mission in India participated in the meeting.
Discussions focused on expanding and diversifying bilateral trade, particularly in agriculture and agro-processing, mining and minerals, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, digital infrastructure, and MSME development.
Key sectors targeted for trade and investment include coffee, cocoa products, pulses, fruits, vegetables, spices, dairy products, critical minerals, and petrochemicals.
Both countries also agreed to explore memorandums of understanding in key sectors, including public works and infrastructure, agriculture, traditional medicine, and telemedicine.
As part of the visit, the Ugandan delegation toured the Noida Special Economic Zone to gain insights into India’s industrial and export ecosystem.
