KAMPALA, Uganda — The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Ssenyonyi, has urged the government to prioritize its budget based on the needs and aspirations of Ugandans, ensuring equitable resource allocation and efficient service delivery.
Speaking at Parliament on Tuesday, Ssenyonyi presented the opposition’s alternative budget for the upcoming 2025/26 financial year, themed “Combating Corruption the Effective Way to Proper Service Delivery”. He emphasized the need for more effective and equitable measures to improve the country’s budget performance.
Ssenyonyi criticized the excessive use of supplementary budgets, which he believes have contributed to Uganda’s growing debt burden. He also expressed concerns over corruption, unused loans, wasteful expenditures, and classified spending.
The Leader of Opposition called for the implementation of equitable and efficient tax policies, highlighting the current inequities in Uganda’s tax system. He urged for a fairer tax regime, ensuring all Ugandans contribute their fair share.
Ssenyonyi’s alternative budget focuses on investing in key sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, and infrastructure to drive inclusive development. He emphasized the need for adequate funding for public hospitals, support for small-scale farmers, improvements in education, and investment in sustainable infrastructure.
Former Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza reiterated the need to combat corruption, stating it affects and hurts all Ugandans. “Let’s continue making noise until the vice is eliminated from Uganda,” she added.
