KAMPALA – In an emergent trend that is fast becoming the norm, companies took to their Social Media handles to wish the worlds greatest beings- the mothers, a happy mothers day. Different ministries and ministerial departments made a mad rush posting eye-catching and very personal messages to the mothers.
The Telecoms too were not to be left out. The one that got our attention this time was Smile Telecom. It must have been the wording on the Tweet the worlds greatest creation, smiles so pure, loves so strong because only a mother can that resonated with the Social Media users.
Smile telecom is probably Uganda’s leading telecom in data services, the pioneer of the 4G LTE in Uganda. But for some reasons, the 4G LTE pioneer had kept a low profile with speculation of the telecom having exited the market but on mothers, day Smile Telecom re-emerged with style. Like everyone else smiles on its Twitter handle wished the mothers a happy mothers day in a colourful and catchy tweet.
The origin of mothers day is still unclear although some suggest that Mother’s Day was celebrated by the Greeks and the Romans in ancient times by worshipping Goddess Rhea and Cybelle.
Another popular belief is that Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the US. A woman named Anna Jarvis wanted a special day dedicated to mothers since her mother expressed this desire.
In spite of the lack of clarity on origin, the day has become part and parcel of our of world culture and by extension the Ugandan culture.
