KIKUUBE – A total of 15 boreholes have been handed over to communities in Kikuube, Uganda, in a bid to alleviate water scarcity and provide access to clean drinking water.
The initiative, undertaken by EACOP Ltd, is expected to benefit approximately 3,600 people across 600 households.
As part of the project, 10 existing water points along the pipeline route have been replaced, and five new boreholes have been created to provide safe water access.
The move is seen as a significant step towards improving water coverage in rural areas, where access to clean water remains a major challenge.
Uganda’s government has set ambitious targets to increase safe water supply coverage from 70% to 85% in rural areas, and from 74% to 100% in urban areas.
According to John Bosco Habumugisha, EACOP’s Deputy Managing Director and General Manager for Uganda, “Access to clean and safe drinking water remains a significant challenge in Uganda.” He emphasized the critical importance of clean water, stating that the initiative has taken a commendable step towards empowering host communities.
Resident District Commissioner Peter Banura praised the project, saying it marks significant progress in supporting the government’s efforts to develop human capital. “This initiative marks significant progress in supporting the government’s efforts to develop human capital under the National Development Plan III,” he said. “I commend EACOP for being a true corporate citizen, transforming lives through this and other impactful projects.”
The boreholes were officially handed over in a ceremony attended by local officials and community representatives.
