KAMPALA. After celebrating Martyrs’ Day the Uganda Episcopal Conference has gone into a week’s session where the Catholic bishops take collective decisions to steer the Church in the country.
Gulu Archbishop John Baptist Odama is the current chairman of the conference.
The Church on June 3 celebrated Martyrs Day with celebrations at the Catholic side led by Hoima Diocese.
Bishop Vincent Kirabo Amooti was main celebrant. Namirembe diocese led the celebrations at the Anglican side which had a guest preacher.
The agenda at the closed Catholic bishops meeting in Nsambya is not yet known but a source close to the deliberations said the bishops may come up with a stand on how to handle reformed priests of Kampala Archdiocese especially Fr. Deo Ssonko who had gone with the breakaway faction of Fr. Pellegrino Kibuuka.
The priests had been automatically ex-communicated after Archbishop Odama on behalf of the Catholic Church indicated that they had indulged in “self excommunication”.
The Bishops will also chose the next animating diocese for Uganda Martyrs Day, most likely to be Tororoor or Jinja, according to sources.
