MBALE. Police in Mbale District are investigating circumstances under which thugs attacked and injured a prison warder and made off with his gun.
Corporal John Robert Ochingamire attached to Mbale Prison was on guard at Mbale prisons farm at Nkoma when he was hit by suspected iron bar hit men at around 1am Thursday night.
Ochingamire, who was on duty with two other warders to guard the prisons maize plantation, is currently admitted to Mbale Hospital where he was taken unconscious.
According to Suwed Manshur, the Elgon police spokesperson, the slow response by his colleagues made the assailants flee the scene with little trace. Police, he added, have mounted a search for the assailants.
“Three men attacked the warder, hit him and he fell unconscious and they made off with his gun. He woke up in hospital,” Manshur said.
Prisons spokesperson Frank Baine has described the incident as unfortunate as the other two warders could not respond in time.
He said Uganda prisons may prefer a charge of negligence on the three warders, depending on results of investigations
“Of course, this is unfortunate but how could people attack one and others do not respond quickly? If there was negligence then those responsible shall be brought to book,” Baine told PML Daily on phone.
