
SIRONKO–One person has been confirmed dead while six others are still missing in a landslide that hit the Eastern district of Sironko yesterday.
The 6:00pm incident at Namango village in Masaba sub-county followed an afternoon downpour.
Morris Gisamba a resident, said hundreds of locals have gathered at the scene and are using rudimentary tools like hoes and spades to dig into the rubble in a desperate attempt to find loved ones trapped there.
Five families are said to be trapped as debris of mud covered their houses.
Simon Gisamba, another resident, said his wife and three children are missing and believes they are trapped.
“I had gone to the trading centre only to return and find my entire household covered in mud,” he said.
Elgon police spokesperson Sowed Manshur confirmed yesterday that one person is dead while 10 others are missing in the Sironko landslide.
However, in an update this morning, Manshur told PML Daily that four people have been found alive and the search for the missing six is still ongoing.
On Sunday, a landslide also struck the nearby Bududa district leaving three villages destroyed and more than 200 people displaced.
