KAMPALA–As Parliament this afternoon prepares to discuss whether to amend Article 102(b) to scrap the Presidential age limits, Dr Kizza Besigye, the former FDC Presidential candidate has been arrested.
Police intercepted Besigye at Mini-Price down town as he was heading to Parliament and towed his vehicle up to Central Police Station.
By press time, Besigye was still in his car at CPS, with hundreds of his supporters surrounding the Police station, demanding that he be left to go.
East African Legislative Assembly legislator Fred Mukasa Mbidde was also arrested. Police intercepted Mbidde as he was leaving his home in Makindye with his supporters.
“I am going to meet the Speaker to raise my concerns,” Mbidde told the Police men.
He was arrested and driven away in a Police truck.
Meanwhile, the age limit motion has been put on the Order Paper, meaning the legislators will debate the matter.
Ruth Nankabirwa, the Government Chief Whip, said NRM legilslators, using their numerical strength, will force the Speaker to allow the house debate the age limit.
Article 102(b) of the Constitution has become contentious issue, with religious leaders, demanding government to conduct a referendum on the matter.
A cross the major towns in the country, the youth are demonstrating, protesting the move, arguing that it will give President Museveni green light to stay in power until he dies.
