KAMPALA–After meeting the NRM legislators supporting the lifting of the age limit, President Museveni also plans to meet the Central Executive Committee members of the party, the government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa, has revealed.
She, however, did not reveal the exact date of the meeting.
“The party chairman will soon meet CEC members to discuss the lifting of the Presidential age limit bill,” she said.
Some NRM CEC members like Francis Bbabu and Godfrey Nyakana, among others, are complaining of the party structures not being consulted on the matter.
But Nankabirwa said the new programme they have drafted will even involve party leaders from the grassroots.
“We have about 30 NRM leaders at the village level. We shall reach them and get their views,” she added.
Last Friday, President Museveni publicly announced that he was supporting the amending of Article 102(b) of the Constitution to allow those who have clocked 75 years and above to contest for the Presidency.
As the NRM legislators are meeting local leaders to discuss the bill, their counterparts in the opposition are organizing rallies.
Mengo weighs in
Meanwhile, Mengo government has criticized the manner in which security agents and bodaboda cyclists are harassing those opposed to the age limit bill.
During the Mengo Lukiiko meeting, Charles Peter Mayiga, the Katikiiro of Buganda Kingdom, advised that both groups should be given a chance to talk to people.
He also blamed some bodaboda cyclists, who took the law in their hands and beat teachers and pupils for wearing red uniform at the Northern By-pass in Busega, a Kampala surburb.
“How can you cane school children because of wearing red uniform,” Mayiga wondered.
Currently, opposition figures and those opposing the lifting of age limit wear red colour.
