JINJA– Angry Butembe County residents this evening stoned their area MP’s vehicle, accusing him of heaping praise on President Museveni’s government and supporting the lifting of the age limit.
Nelson Lufafa was addressing residents of Mafubira sub-county as part of ongoing consultations on the contentious bill tabled in Parliament by Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi.
Trouble started when a group of youth wearing red ribbons, that have recent become symbols of opposition to the age limit, stormed Hon Lufafa’s rally at Mafubira Primary School chanting the National Anthem.
Michael Nabeta, one of the residents, said it is time for President Museveni to quit the stage and let other Ugandans take over the mantle of leadership.
He castigated government for spending money on bribing Ugandans to support the age limit instead of attending to critical issues in the country.
“ Lufafa has been ferrying people from different parts of the constituency and giving them between Shs10,000 and Shs20,000 to support the amendment of the Constitution,” he said.
Lufafa recently posted on his facebook wall that Butembe County residents were against the removal of the Presidential age limits from the Constitution. He promised to follow the people’s decision and present their position in Parliament.
In an interview with PML Daily, Lufafa blamed the incident on idle youth who he said abuse drugs and cause mayhem in the area. He said he has reported the issue to police.
However, the legislator seems to have turned against his word and he has in recent days been preaching the removal of the age limit gospel and heaping praise on President Museveni, describing him as an extra-ordinary leader.
The stoning of Lufafa’s vehicle comes just two days after former FDC Presidential candidate Dr Kizza Besigye addressed a mammoth crowd at Kazimingi Grounds in Jinja Municipality where he called upon residents to unite against the age limit.
