GULU–A security guard attached to Exposs security Limited, a private security company, last night shot the Gulu District Police Commander from TAKS, a community centre in Gulu town.
The acting DPC, ASP Joseph Ayiki, was shot in the right leg slightly below the knee at 3am at the centre by David Olanya, who had been deployed to guard the centre premises.
David Odwar Lukani, the director of TAKS centre, said he did not know what exactly transpired and only learnt of the incident in the morning.
“There was no activity at the centre at 3am and the public knows that we close business by 10pm,” Odwar said.
He noted that on Tuesday 28, there was a function at the centre organized by Post Bank but it ended at around 8pm.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, the Police spokesperson for Aswa river region, confirmed the incident, adding that ASP Ayiki was shot at 3am and later rushed to Police station as a suspect before being taken to Gulu regional referral hospital for medical attention.
Okema said police is keeping Olanya under custody at Gulu Central police station to aid investigation.
Unverified information posted by a volunteer (name withheld) of TAKS centre on social media says the acting DPC was shot when he jumped over the fence and was checking doors of vehicles parked at the centre.
It is also alleged that he was attempting to pick executive chairs and tables left under the tents of belonging to Post Bank prompting the centre guard to shoot.
Drani Demond, a doctor at Gulu Imaging Centre, a medical facility in the town, said Ayiki sustained fractures and needs a lot of blood transfusion because he lost a lot of blood through the injuries.
