JINJA–The Jinja High Court on Monday, blocked the Electoral Commission from proceeding with the lower Local Council elections slated for next week.
The injuction follows an application filed by a concerned citizen Allan Alibawani.
High Court’s Justice Jesse Byaruhanga Rugyema ruled in the absence of the Electoral Commission lawyers, who according to the judge, were duly served but failed to turn up.
The judge ordered the Commission along with all its agents and servants to restrain from conducting the elections, until the main application challenging the exercise is determined. The injunction is to stand for the next 60 days.
The electoral commission spokesperson Jotham Taremwa when contacted, confirmed that they had received the court order. He said the commission was preparing a press statement in response.
The LC 1 Elections were initially scheduled for November 21st and were to be conducted through lining up behind the preferred candidate.
