Seven of the 14 suspects accused of killing former police spokesperson AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, his driver Godfrey Wambewa and bodyguard Kenneth Erau have been released
The suspects were released by Nakawa Grade One Magistrate Noah Sajjabi on a Shs50 million non cash bail while each of their sureties was ordered to sign a Shs500 million non-cash bond.
The magistrate based on Article 73 of the Constitution which gives court powers to grant anyone who spends six months on remand without being committed to the High Court for trial.
“These people first appeared before this court on April 21, 2017 and the six months have already elapsed without being committed for trial,” he ruled, before ordering the accused to return to court on November 23.
Those released include Shanan Senfuka, Hassan Tusiime, Sheikh Musa Brenda, Ibrahim Kisa, Sheikh Majidu Ojegere and Hamiidu Magambo.
It should remembered that High court judge justice Oumo Oguli last month ordered government to compensate each one of the suspects in this case with Shs80 million after finding that they were tortured by Police while in detention.
