The Catholic Church in Uganda has dismissed a video making rounds on social media that Pope Francis has resigned his position.
In a statement signed by Gulu Archbishop John Baptist Odama, the church assured followers that the charismatic Pope continues to carry out his apostolic duties normally and was currently on his papal voyage to Peru and Chile.
“The Holy Father has not given any indication resignation and as a matter of fact, he is currently on his Apostolic journey to Chile and Peru,” Archbishop Odama, who is Chairman of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, said in the statement.
Pope Francis was elected Pope in March 2013, after his predecessor Pope Benedict XV1 resigned from the role, a rare occurrence in the Catholic Church.
Pope Francis, who is of the Jesuit Order, has taken to tackling corruption in the Roman Curia head on, and reformation of the Church, some of the reasons that led to the resignation of his predecessor.
