KAMPALA–Unknown assailants on Thursday evening shot dead two police officers attached to Field Force Unit in Kawempe Division and ran way with their guns.
The deceased were identified as Vincent Habiyaremye and Ambrose Otim. The duo were attacked as they were patrolling Kizza Zone, Kawempe division, according Emilian Kayima, the Police spokesperson.
Their bodies were taken to Mulago Hospital for post-mortem. Luke Oweyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, said the incident happened at 8pm. He said police have intensified the hunt for the assailants.
The bodies of the two officers were found lying in a pool of blood.
“Our officers from the Flying Squad Unit and other units are on ground hunting for the suspects,” Oweyesigire said.
This is the second attack on the Police in the same area by armed thugs.
Last year, unknown gunmen shot dead two officers and took their guns as they were escorting a confectionery truck that was collecting money from clients.
The same year, two policemen, Moses Karungi and one Mubiru were killed along Gayaza road. They were attempting to block armed men from robbing cashiers of a Kampala bakery who were transporting money from several sale points.
IGP orders
IGP Gen Kale Kayihura recently ordered his officers to always move in groups to avoid being killed. Those moving alone, Kayihura said, should be arrested.
