Police in Kampala on Wednesday arrested a former contestant for the Kampala Lord Mayor seat on suspicion of defrauding an American businessman of Shs575 millions in a fake gold deal.
The suspect identified as Muhammad Leon Kasule, also known as Big Boy, is currently being investigated by the CID headquarters in Kibuli, a city suburb.
The CID spokesperson, Mr Vincent Ssekate, said Kasule’s arrest came after receiving a complaint from a Ugandan in the Diaspora called Florence Kiremerwa.
He said in June 2017, Kilemerwa met a one Richards, who had gone to the DRC embassy in the United States to get a visa to Congo to buy Gold. She then connected him to Kasule for help.
Huge amounts of money meant for purchase of gold were channelled through Kiremerwa’s Eco Bank accounts to Kasule.
When Kilemerwa realised that she had been conned, she complained to the Prime Minister for intervention and when this didn’t work out, she decided to report the case to police.
Mr Sekate said police are currently investigating whether the said money was fraudulently obtained as well as if money received by Kilemerwa from Richards was sent to Kasule.
A case file no. GEF 784/2017 has been opened up and Kasule is being detained at Kabalagala Police Station.
