The High Court in Soroti has sentenced a 40-year-old man to 35 years in prison for attacking his lover with acid that claimed her life.
Justice David Batema on Friday ruled that prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that Andrew Francis Obiria on September 8, 2013, poured acid on Dorothy Atim at the main gate to their home in Soroti Senior Quarters.
According to prosecution, Atim, while on death bed in Mulago hospital intensive care unit, mentioned Obiria as her attacker before breathing her last.
“I take her cry very seriously and through her mother who confirmed that she identified the attacker, there is no doubt the deceased recognized the accused because there were security lights,” Justice Batema said, ruling out any possibility of mistaken identity on the victim side.
He added that the convict at one point approached one of the teachers at Soroti Secondary School, demanding to be given acid.
Justice Batema added that the accused went into hiding, before he later handed himself to police, adding that the wounds found on the accused showed scattered scars, consisted with acid burns.
Obiria, who has been on remand for the last five years, will be transferred to Luzira, where he will serve his jail sentence.
