President Museveni has criticised residents of Rukungiri District for voting Opposition leaders, whom he described as liars, inexperienced and only thriving on propaganda.
The President, who made several stopovers at different trading centres on his way to a rally in Nyakagyeme Sub-county, faulted the residents for abandoning NRM leaders whom he said are tried and tested.
“It is the movement which fought Amin, Obote, Kony, ADF and brought peace. What has the opposition done?” he said on Friday.
Rukungiri District is home to opposition leader Kizza Besigye, who has challenged Mr Museveni in presidential elections on four occasions. The district has always voted overwhelmingly for opposition leaders, with Dr Besigye winning more than 90 percent of the vote in the 2016 presidential election.
On many of the stopovers by the President, many residents chose to keep away, unusual for his visits which often attract many people.
While in Nyakagyeme Sub-county, the President assured the residents that he has always worked to eliminate poverty from society.
“I started the fight against poverty in 1967 after my Advanced Level with people of Nyabushozi, who were pastoralists until they got permanent homes and began to work for development,” he added.
Mr Museveni also underscored the importance of working with small people to implement his policies, adding that during the Bush War, he never relied on important people like bishops to penetrate society.
“That is why I am this young. I do this work all by myself. I don’t have to rely on MPs and district leaders,” he said.
The President then donated Shs110m to different Sacco’s and women groups in the area.
