Kitgum Woman MP Beatrice Anywar has revealed that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) official who is accused of sexually abusing girls in refugee hosting districts of northern Uganda has been arrested.
According to Ms Anywar, Ali Khamis, an Arab of Tanzanian origin who works in Lamwo Refugee Camp, has been sodomizing young local girls, with some sustaining rectal damage.
Addressing journalists on Monda, the legislator said Khamis was arrested after UNHCR headquarters confirmed that he was not a diplomat as earlier thought.
She said he was arrested on the intervention of CID Director Grace Akullo and is currently detained at Jinja Road Police Station.
Ms Anywar said one of Khamis’ victims is currently admitted in a hospital in Kampala and has been passing out stool uncontrollably.
Last week, the MP had told Parliament that the suspect was not being arrested despite many cases of sodomy being reported to police against him.
When contacted, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire promised to verify information about the arrest and get back to us.
