
KAMPALA – The committee on legal education and training of the Law Council has announced August 20 as the date for the compulsory Pre-Entry Examination for admission to the Post Graduate Bar course for 2018/2019 academic year.
The exams will be held at the Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA) Multipurpose hall, Lugogo, Prof Fredrick Ssempebwa the Chairperson to the Council, said in a statement at the weekend.
For one to be eligible to sit the examination, he or she must possess the minimum admission requirements of the University accredited to teach law course in Uganda, the statement said. The listed universities accredited to teach law course in Uganda include Makerere University, Uganda Christian University, Kampala International University, Nkumba University, Uganda Martyrs’ University and Uganda Pentecostal University.

Others include the Islamic University in Uganda, Busoga University, Bishop Stuart University, St Augustine University, Cavendish University, Gulu University and international University of East Africa.
The closed book examination will start at 9:00 am, and all candidates have been asked to be at the venue by at least one and half hours to the examination time. Mobile phones have been banned inside the exam venue.
“Applicants will be assessed in all the core university law course areas including legal methods, constitutional law, law of contract and criminal law,” Prof. Ssempebwa said, adding that other areas include, law of torts, law of evidence, civil procedure and criminal procedure
The registration process will end four days to the examination date, and bank slips for those intending to sit the examination are obtainable at the Law Development Centre (LDC) a non refundable fee of Shs 50,000 payable to designated banks.
“Bank slips are supposed to be returned to LDC together with two recent copies of the candidates passport size photographs. Thereafter a candidate will issued with an examination entry card for use in the examination,” the statement says.
Candidates who passed Law Council pre -entry exam of the previous years between 2015 and 2017 may apply for the 2018 course without sitting the paper.
A post graduate bar course leads to the award of A post graduate diploma in legal practice which is a professional requirement for enrollment as an advocate of the High Court and practicing law in Uganda.
