KASESE – An unidentified police officer attached to the Field Force Unit (FFU) at Hima Police Station has allegedly shot dead an officer of Uganda People’s Defense Forces.
The deceased identified as Lance Corporal Johnson Bright, a soldier attached to the 11th UPDF Battalion was killed on July 15.
According to the UPDF 11th battalion spokesperson Captain Stephen Tumwesigye, Bright was killed at Maliba Trading Centre in Maliba Sub County in Kasese District.
Tumwesigye said Bright formerly served under the African Union Mission in Somalia-AMISOM and that he returned a few months back.
“He was on his first leave; unfortunately last night [when] he went for an evening [out] with his colleague, he was shot dead by police in unclear circumstances. So we are investigating what could have been the cause of the shooting resulting into his death,” says Captain Tumwesigye.
According to eye witness Bright and his brother Nicholas Baguma, had gone for a drink up to the nearby centre when they were surrounded by a team of police officers.
“At around 8:30pm, while at a bar, police officers came and asked us ‘what time is this?’ Bright said it is still early, he offered to show them his government ID, but they refused, pushed him and a police officer put him on gunpoint, I was with Bright and a lady. Bright was suddenly shot dead,” the brother narrated.
Baguma reported to police and they have since police promised to release a statement on the shooting.
