GULU – Police in Gulu town on Wednesday rearrested Charles Onekgiu who had been arrested and charged with aggravated defilement on July 23, after his nude photos with a minor leaked.
Police re-arrested Onekgiu, a businessman in Gulu town and whisked him off to an unknown location soon after Gulu Chief Magistrate gave him unconditional bail.
Onekgiu’s lawyers, Odongo and Company Advocates secured an unconditional bail based on the argument that Onekgiu had overstayed in Police custody without appearing in court. Onekgiu has been in Police cells for about three weeks.
Police Spokesman for Aswa river region, Jimmy Patrick Okema, confirmed that the suspect had overstayed in their custody because they were still investigating the matter and given the nature of the offence they believed that giving the suspect bond could put him in danger since the community was angered by his case.
Okema said the Wednesday 3:00 pm arrest was inevitable because there was a fresh allegation of child kidnap against the suspect at Gulu central police station.
“Before his release, there were fresh allegations of child kidnap and sacrifice against him. We believe he may have killed the child for his ritual gain because he is the only one who knows where the child is right now,” Okema said.
He said the suspect is in their facility and a fresh investigation has started.
Okema also noted that Police is receiving very many calls from both Uganda and abroad to ensure that the suspect faces the law.
