GULU – Jubilation broke out at Gulu High Court on Monday after Justice Stephen Mubiru granted bail to 12 suspects, including four Members of Parliament who have been detained at Gulu Central Prison charged with treason over the Arua election campaign chaos.
MPs Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, Gerald Karuhanga, Paul Mwiru, Arua Municipality MP-elect Kassiano Wadri, former Makindye MP Mike Mabikke and 8 other suspects were released on a Shs5 million non-cash bond each while each of their sureties were granted a Shs10 million bond.
The bail came after a spirited fight by several lawyers, who included Caleb Alaka, Medard Ssegona, Abdu Katuntu, Nicholas Opiyo and Asuman Basalirwa.
The Judge, however, ordered the MPs to refrain from holding celebratory processions as this could interfere with the case investigation.
The court will later in the afternoon hear bail applications for the other batch of the suspects.
Following the ruling, thousands of MPs’ supporters broke into celebrations, with chants of “People Power, Our Power”.
Justice Mubiru also declined a prosecution request for the court to hold onto the passports of the bailed suspects, stating that some of these might need them to travel for medication and that having to pick them in Gulu would be a big inconvenience.
