KAMPALA – Police on Monday afternoon charged Mityana Municipality MP Francis Zaake with treason and unlawful escape before releasing him on bond.
The charges were dramatic in a sense that he was charged while on a hospital bed in Kiruddu hospital, according to one of his lawyers, Mr Nicholas Opiyo
“Police have bonded him (Zaake) for a month to allow him to travel for medical treatment,” Mr Opiyo said.
The MP is required to re-appear at the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters on October 3, 2018.
The MP was on Thursday grabbed from Entebbe International Airport as his family prepared to fly him to India for specialized treatment. Mr Zaake, together with the Kyadondo East MP, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine, were forced into waiting for police ambulances and taken to Kiruddu Hospital.

On Sunday, Zaake’s relatives said the doctors who were supposed to examine the legislator had not reported to Kiruddu Hospital since he was admitted.
According to Mr Dan Mugambwa, a brother of the MP, a team of doctors from Mulago Hospital were assigned to examine Mr Zaake and make a report to government but they had not showed up despite having made promises to come.
At least 33 suspects, including Bobi Wine, who is now admitted in a US hospital over injuries he said were inflicted on him by security agencies, have been charged with treason.
