KAMPALA- The Attorney General has withdrawn his application in which he had sought the Supreme Court to reject an appeal that was filed by the Uganda Law Society (ULS) challenging the Constitutional Court judgment that upheld the removal of the presidential age limit from the Constitution.
The hearing of the application had come up for hearing today before Seven Justices led by the Chief Justice Bert Katureebe who allowed their application after Attorney General William Byaruhanga conceded to the validation citing the importance of the case before Court that touches on the Constitution of our Country.
Other justices include; Jotham Tumwesigye, Paul Mugamba, Opio Aweri, Richard Buteera, Stellah Arach Amoko, and Lillian Tibatemwa.
The Chief Justice has now adjourned the sitting to tomorrow November 14 when the main appeal filed by Hassan Male Mabilizi, Six Opposition Members of Parliament and Uganda Law Society will be Scheduled.
The AG had asked the Supreme Court to discard ULS’s appeal on grounds that they had served them with the notice of appeal 13 days after the deadline and hence should be struck out.
The appeals filed by the Uganda Law society , six opposition MPs and Hassan Male Mabirizi among other appellants arise from a July /2018 Constitutional court ruling at Mbale in which four justices retained constitutional amendments by Parliament that lifted the cap from the minimum and maximum presidential age -limits something the appellants claim was done in an unconstitutional manner .
