MUKONO – Drama ensued at Mulajje in Mukono District on Tuesday, March 12, when residents blocked off police from arresting a woman suspected of using supernatural powers to punish thieves who stole her cow.
It is suspected that when Ms. Nagujja’s cow was stolen, she resorted to sorcery.
Ms. Nagujja did not report to the police because many of her neighbours who had lost their animals had not been helped by the police.
Ms. Nagujja resorted to witchcraft and on Tuesday mid-morning news started spreading like a bush fire that two residents identified as Kaswigiri and Fameica from the neighbouring village were behaving like madmen, crying, scratching themselves to the point of peeling off their skins and eating grass like cattle.
Later, Ms. Nagujja was arrested for causing public disorder.
However, the excited crowd threatened to turn violent if police went ahead with the arrest of Nagujja who, they say, had discovered a solution to cattle theft.
Ms. Edisa Wamala, who chaired the impromptu meeting in the village, warned the rest who think that they will survive by stealing from others to see this as an example.
She also said that police has not been helpful to them on the number of times they have been reporting to them about their stolen animals.
The police officers left the scene, leaving Kaswigiri and Fameica ‘eating grass’ while the crowd enjoyed what was going on.
