KAMPALA – Police in Kampala are investigating circumstances under which thugs attempted to break into a branch of Barclays Bank in Kampala in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Sources close to the investigations have told this website that hooded men broke the glass window of the bank’s branch in Nakulabye, Rubaga Division, and attempted to gain access but could not due to the burglar proofs.
The thugs are said to have sedated the two guards at the bank with chloroform before attempting to access the bank.
The guards are said to have fled after seeing a police patrol vehicle in the vicinity. The criminals reportedly took off after detecting police presence.
Sources said senior police officers, including Old Kampala DPC Edrisa Kyeyune, visited the crime scene at night.
When contacted, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed the incident.
“The thugs were two and they were putting on hoods. They cut the window but failed to enter the bank. This incident is under investigation,” Mr Onyango said.
“This incident happened in the night and it is being investigated. We are following all leads and we shall give updates. We are going to use our CCTV cameras at Nankulabye,” he added.
Sources close to the investigation say they are investigating possible collusion between the security guards and the thugs. The two security guards, who belong to Special Group Africa (SGA), have since been arrested.
The incident comes barely a week after Internal Security Organisation operatives shot dead two suspected thugs of a Stanbic Bank bullion van at Kyambogo. The van was from collecting money in Kayunga, Lugazi and Mukono towns. At least Shs700m were stolen in the operation. Among the killed was Pte Bright Turyatunga a former Special Forces Command (SFC) soldier.
Last month, thugs stormed the dfcu Bank branch in Bwaise, raped female staff and assaulted the males after failing to access cash.
