LIRA – The various traders from Lango sub-region and part of Acholi sub-region are part of the members who will benefit from the money as compensation for their antagonized businesses way back in 2008.
On Tuesday, April 9, a number of people from these regions stormed the Select Committee on Traders chaired by Ms. Ann Maria Nankabirwa, the woman MP for Kyankwanzi District to receive documentation from these people.
Ms. Nankabiwrwa said that it is crucial for her committee to receive all the varied documents in order to be compiled together and allow proper allocation of the monies the government of Uganda is willing to invest in the payments of the traders.
A total of UGX41b is the amount of money the Ugandan government is going to be paid as compensation to the traders.
Mr. Geoffrey Okwir Gunya who led the team told the Committee that the compensation has taken too long that people who lost their businesses are now losing even the little they were left with.
Speaking during the Committee, Hon. Cecilia Ogwal commended the chair of the Committee for accommodating these people and also being kind to them.
She also appealed to Ms. Nankabirwa to visit them after this saga of compensation is done.
The Chair stated that it will be good for all those traders to be compensated so that all get their shares as opposed to the 10 people who had been selected to get the money.
