
MBARARA – Celebrations and Ululations rocked Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) on Wednesday evening, April 17 after People Power candidate Mr. Umar Ryan Muhumuza was declared the guild president 2019/2020 defeating other five.
Mr. Marius Atwebembire, the returning officer who doubles as the university speaker declared Mr. Muhumuza after he garnered the highest votes 878. Others included Mr. Coleb Kanyesigye (Independent) who got 869, Mr. Hakim Bukenya (NRM) 304, Mr. Paul Turyamureba (FDC), Mr. Ivan Sserunjogi 51 and Mr. Bisman Eugine 146.
After declaring, Mr. Muhumuza in the company of his supporters started processions from compass and proceeded to Mbarara town, he was escorted by Makerere Guild president Julius Katerega who recently won the election under people power political ideology and members from Kampala.
At around 8 pm, they were intercepted by police with bullets to disperse them.

It should be noted that People Power has been reported to have taken most guild positions in most universities that have so far gone into elections. These include Nkumba University, Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Ndejje University, Makerere University Business School and now MUST.
Mr. Muhumuza thanked the students of MUST for having stood firm despite the fact that other camps had big financial muscle.
“This is one of the indicators that us as youths if we believe and trust ourselves, we can cause change and bring the leadership that shall liberate us,” Mr. Muhumuza noted.
