KABALE – The outspoken Catholic priest from Kabale Diocese, Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda, has said the political rise of Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine is like that of Jesus Christ.
Addressing journalists in Kabale Town on Wednesday, Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda said just like Jesus was born from a humble family and despised by Jews during his mission but later saved the world; Bobi Wine’s political journey is similar.
Who could ever think that Bobi Wine from ghetto would be a Member of Parliament? You never know he may be the future President of Uganda. When Jesus Christ was born in a cow’s shelter and laid in the cattle trough, the strong leaders and prominent people at the time despised him but now he is celebrated by millions of Christian’s world over as their savior,” he said.
The critic of the ruling NRM party said Bobi Wine’s fight against bad leadership is like that of Jesus Christ who opposed the hypocritical leaders of his time who fought Christianity.
“If those people harassing Bobi Wine for his vision of fighting for the poor read the Holy Bible on how Jesus became the savior of the Christians, they would just leave him. Those that were in the bush in the 1980s were being castigated by the then regime in power but now they are in charge of the country. Our leaders must learn from history,” Fr Batanyenda said.
Bobi Wine was on Monday charged at Buganda Road court on Monday over charges related to the protest he led against Over the Top Tax (OTT) in July 2018. He was remanded to Luzira prison and on Thursday, he appeared before the same court for bail application.
Bobi Wine entered active politics in 2017 and won the Kyadondo East by-election with a landslide victory. He is the face of “People Power”, a political movement of sorts, which has morphed into a force to reckon with. Bobi Wine’s phenomenal rise has left established politicians both in government and opposition scampering for ways of containing him.
