MUKONO – An air of grief is hanging over the home of State Minister for Water Ronald Kibuule in Mbalala, Mukono District, after the bodies of twins, who drowned in the swimming pool on Monday, were on Tuesday returned from Mulago hospital City Mortuary.
The two-year-old twins identified as Roman Kato and Raiding Wasswa reportedly drowned after escaping the attention of their minders.
On Tuesday morning, the twins’ mother Fortunate and the minister could not control their tears as hundreds of mourners, including Vice President Edward Ssekandi, flocked the home to console them.
There was loud wailing from several relatives and friends at the home about the tragedy that police has confirmed it is investigating. A police officer investigating the matter intimated to this website that the accident was largely caused by negligence of the minders, who have since been arrested.
The officer said the two caretakers switched off and the twins went into the pool, which is located in the family compound and drowned. Minister Kibuule was at the time of the incident reported to be in Kampala while wife Fortunate had been at a construction site in Namataba, a few kilometres from home.
The police officer added that they were unable to view the incident because at the time of the incident the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the compound were switched off.
Mr. Kibuule on Tuesday confirmed the incident.
“They have been going to the pool under supervision but today their mother was away,” he told NBS Television in an interview.
“It seems the caretakers were reluctant and the kids went to the pool by themselves.
Mukono District Police Commander Rogers Seguya, who visited the home and inspected the swimming pool, refused to divulge details of the investigations.
“You will be informed of the outcome soon,” he said on Tuesday.
President Museveni as well as Mr Rebecca Kadaga, the speaker of Parliament, who on Tuesday telephoned to condole with the bereaved family, are expected at the home.
