KAMPALA – Police on Monday 6, confirmed that it has no clue where blogger Ashiraf Katto alias Ashburg Katto is.
Speaking at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said the force has no idea about Katto’s alleged disappearance and disregarded the rumours that he is under Police custody.
He, however, said “Police is going to start investigations [into the alleged] kidnapped and where he could be.”
According to relatives, Ashraf Katto was first summoned by Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) last week in regard to his Ghetto TV an online channel which UCC accuses of inciting violence by broadcasting live proceedings every time Bobi Wine encounters the Police.
Katto is said to have gone missing on May 2, as he was preparing to attend a court hearing of Bobi Wine’s case the same day at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates’ court.
Shafiq Mukubira, a friend to Katto says Ashburg was not seen at Buganda Road Court that day.
“He left his home in Namasuba at around 8:00 a.m but he never reached Buganda Road Court. I was there but I did not see him,” Mukubira added.
His family could not reach him because of the possibility that authorities had confiscated his phones.
Katto’s family insisted that he might be in Mbuya Barracks and demanded for an explanation from Police on why a civilian like Katto is detained in a Military Barracks.
Bashir Mbaziira the Uganda Journalists Association President said this issue concerns all journalists. “As UJA, we have given Police 24 hours to tell us where Katto is,” he asserted.
