KAMPALA – The chairperson of Judiciary’s Technology & Law Reporting Committee, Justice Geoffrey Kiryabwire, and a multi-disciplinary team of Judicial, ICT, Estates, audit Officers and contractors on Wednesday, June 19, inspected the second video conferencing facility at Luzira Maximum Security Prisons.
The new facility at the Luzira Female Wing links directly to Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court, just like the already operational facility at Luzira Upper Prison’s Male Wing. The two facilities in Luzira can also directly link to each other.
Installation of the video conferencing system between Luzira Prison and the court commenced in the 2018/19 FY and was officially launched by the Chief Justice Bart M. Katureebe on April 15, 2019. The facility at the Female Wing was not ready at the time.
The team observed a very impressive installation work today, but recommended minor extra civil works to be carried out at the request of the prisons’ authorities, before the facility at the Female Wing is launched soon.
According to Justice Kiryabwire, the Judiciary Integrated Video Conferencing System which will be rolled out to all the Judiciary locations across the Country is the first of its kind in the whole of East Africa.
The Officer In Charge of the Luzira Prison Female Wing, SP Doreen Asiimwe, was thankful to the Judiciary for the innovation, which she said would make work a lot easier for the prisons.
