NSAMBYA – Police have said they acted on intelligence to foil an attempted robbery at a fuel station owned by Dr Kizza Besigye in Nsambya, a city suburb on Saturday evening.
One suspect was killed and another seriously injured during the shooting in which two guns were recovered.
In a statement issued on Sunday, police spokesperson Fred Enanga said detectives from the Flying Squad Unit had deployed at the fuel station after receiving intelligence of an impending robbery.
“The armed robbers, who approached the petrol station from the side of Nsambya Hospital disguised as customers at the petrol pump, were intercepted, when one of them was heading to the supermarket. The detectives opened fire against them, after they evaded arrest and attempted to flee from the scene. An SAR Rifle and a Toyota Premio, Silver in color, were recovered,” Mr Enanga said.
He said that operation, which was conducted at around 8pm, was highly risky and required quick action due to the potential of severe injuries and collateral damage it could have caused.
He identified the deceased only as Hamza and the injured as David Okello.
” The body of the deceased, only identified as Hamza, was transferred to the City Mortuary for post mortem analysis, while the injured suspect, identified as Rubanga Baruli, was rushed to Mulago Hospital, for further treatment,” Mr Enanga said.
He added that an investigative task team from the Regional Kampala Metropolitan South, Headquarters, is thoroughly reviewing and documenting the crime scene. They will further with inquiries to establish the motive of the suspects.
“We would like to remind owners of all businesses to continue being extra vigilant and to always report all forms of threats facing them to the police and sister security agencies to help counter them,” he added.
