NAMUGONGO – President Yoweri Museveni has assured pilgrims to Martyr’s day fete that the country is peaceful ahead of the big day on Monday.
Mr. Museveni made the remarks on Saturday in a mass organised by the Julius Nyerere family led by Mama Maria, pilgrims from Tanzania and the rest of the world, at Namugongo Martyrs Shrine to pray for Late Mwalimu Julius Nyerere’s beatification and canonization.
“To the pilgrims, I say welcome to Namugongo and welcome to Uganda. Our country is very peaceful. Celebrate Martyrs Day responsibly and I wish you all the best,” Museveni said.

Uganda will be celebrated Martyrs Day on 3rd June at Namugongo in memory of a group of 23 Anglican and 22 Catholic converts to Christianity in the historical kingdom of Buganda, now part of Uganda, who were executed between 31 January 1885 and 27 January 1887.
Tens of thousands of pilgrims are already in Namugongo while others are still trekking to the site many in the Anglican and Catholic religions consider sacred.
If we have spiritually seen the light, then we must do the same economically. We cannnot see the spiritual light yet stay in economic darkness. We must push ourselves a little extra and improve our household incomes. pic.twitter.com/iP6qAqE6eA

On Nyerere, Museveni praised the former Tanzania leader saying ‘no one else has made a bigger contribution to the African race and cause than Mwalimu Nyerere, in the 4.5 million years of human existence.’
Nyerere’s widow, Mama Maria Nyerere led pilgrims from Tanzania.
“I am grateful to Mama Maria. She is not just a religious leader but a political one. Each year, she leads Tanzanian pilgrims here, who then join their East African counterparts and those from the rest of the world. She is making our integration process easy,” Museveni said.
