
HOIMA – Bunyoro Kingdom has been advised by President Museveni to preserve and promote their culture and native language through writing books.
This was delivered through the Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga during the 25th coronation ceremony of Bunyoro’s reigning King – Omukama Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I on Tuesday 11, June.
In his message, Mr. Museveni said that if the language is put into writing, it can cater for the future generations as they will always refer to it.
“Whenever you keep the language and culture in writing, people cannot lose their identity, the books can also be used for the future generation,” Read the speech in part.
Mr. Museveni adds that numerous customs regarding marriage etiquette, rich social philosophy expressed in the proverbs of local languages should also be put on paper for the future generations to always refer to.
The President also thanked Omukama Iguru for unifying his subjects and making the Bunyoro Kingdom a great region.
It is the current regime that restored traditional cultural institutions with the aim of promoting unity amongst regions and communities.
“The NRM government took a bold step of restoring the traditional kingdoms and allowing the formation of new ones in order to preserve their rich cultural heritage, languages, and positive norms,” He added.
The President also urged African nations and states to unite saying they should use the available key resources like language and culture as a tool of unity.
“Colonialism in Africa was successful because of disunity. The painful gains of African sovereignty from the iron fist of colonialism can only be consolidated by a strong focus on exploiting the similarities in history, languages, cultures an interest that we share to form a greater unity,” He urged.
In response, the Omukama Iguru, in his silver jubilee speech also lauded the NRM government for the social infrastructural developments in Bunyoro and encouraged his subjects to use them to develop themselves.
