KAMPALA – Effective July 1 both female and male employees at Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) female employees will get 6 months maternity and one month paternity leave respectively.
Most companies in Uganda have the customary 3-months maternity leave however UBL is going to be the first company to offer such a leave to its employees.
The new policy was first implemented in the United Kingdom with over 4000 employees under Diageo (UBL’s parent company) and is to be implemented in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America where Diageo has its businesses.
According to Mairéad Nayager, Diageo’s chief human resource officer through Diageo’s website,”We are committed to creating a fully inclusive and diverse workforce and we strongly believe that businesses play a significant role in shaping the future of society. Global businesses like Diageo must make bold moves on policies and the environments in which their employees work to ensure that the progress people deserve happens.”
He added that “the policy will support employees to focus on the joy of raising a young family, while continuing to thrive at work, and ensuring women and men are supported to have time with their new baby regardless of where they live and work”.
The policy will be fully funded by the company, retaining benefits and bonuses regardless of gender sexual orientation or whether they become parents biologically, via surrogacy or adopt.
