NAPAK – President Yoweri Museveni is not happy with leaders who have failed to transform their people from subsistence to commercial farming.
Mr. Museveni in a statement described these as a mockery of leadership, for they do not live an exemplary life.
“To have subsistence farmers in your area continuously and you call yourself a leader, you are a mockery of leadership,” Mr. Museveni said.
He said, “Political parties are a means to an end; they cannot be an end in themselves.”
Uganda, being an agricultural country, Museveni asked leaders to make efforts to transform people into modern ways of farming, which will improve their well-being.
“The end is to transform the people: the family, the area, the country and Africa. Transform them how? By making everybody join the modernity of the four sectors: commercial agriculture with cura; industries; services; and ICT,” educated the president.
Early this week, the Mr. Museveni was in Karamoja region on his wealth creation campaign where he lectured local leaders and residents on modern ways of agriculture.
During his radio address at Morulinga State Lodge in Napak District, Mr. Museveni continued to stress the need for Karimojong to abandon their subsistence means of farming, and nomadism for commercialised farming and fruit growing so as to generate wealth.
“If we build at least 20 dams here, one dam will be able to support at least 350 cows during draught. We can then introduce dairy cows to make money,” said Mr. President.
In the same address, Museveni pledged to open up factories in the region but also asked locals to start on small scale businesses.
“We shall invite foreigners here to open up big factories to employ our people, while I urge that the locals invest in small businesses, even if it is able to employ 6 people that will be the start. Imagine if at least 60 people can employ 6 people each.”
“This place is also good for growing fruits. We can grow fruits and invest in juice processing plants. I will personally start a model farm here to show it is possible,” added Mr. Museveni.
He also recommended four sectors of ICT, Commercial Agriculture, Services Sector (Boda bodas/ transport, salon, restaurants and Factories.
