KAMPALA – The family of the late Arnold Ainebyona, the Hickory restaurant owner who was shot dead by a security guard on July 9 has attributed his death to tribalism and blamed the incident on recklessness on the part of security guards.
While speaking at the requiem service of Arnold Ainebyona held at All Saints Cathedral in Nakasero, the deaceased‘s father Mr. Plan Mugisha said that;
“I believe Arnold was shot because of tribalism. Because he is a Munyankore, that one should be a must,” he said in grief.
Mr. Mugisha tasked police and government to recall all guns currently owned by private security companies as well as look for all the other guards involved in the scuffle.
Rev. Medad Birungi who led the service advised the public to avoid provoking people in order to live in harmony and unity.
“There are so many people in Uganda who are angry. When you are angry, you are easily provoked to kill. Anger has brought about demonstrations, murders and it is anger that led to the Rwanda genocide. Self-control, forgiveness and reconciliation are important,” he noted.
The shooting occurred at around 10: 30 am when Mr Ainebyona came with his two friends at the supermarket to shop, after which, he reversed the car and accidentally drove on the foot of another security guard who was identified as Mr. Amwaze Babu.
This led to an exchange of words between the two guards and the three customers in the parking lot which prompted another security guard to shoot at the deceased.
The suspect was identified as Moses Angoria. Onlookers said the culprit hurriedly rushed to the centry box during the verbal exchange, picked his SAR gun and shot Ainebyona in the head.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigire revealed that yesterday, police received a statement from one of the people who had moved with the deceased
“We now have occurrences from both sides. All this is evidence we shall use when the security guard gets better. He’s currently in Mulago Hospital getting treatment. If the courts see it fit that he is guilty of murder, he’ll be held accountable,” The Police spokesperson assured them.
