KAMPALA – People Power movement a pressure group led by Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine has blasted President Yoweri Museveni over the new electoral reforms, saying the NRM Chairman is trying to stop them.
“Looking at the proposed electoral reforms, I can’t help but realise how President Museveni is gripped by fear of People Power,” reads in parts a statement issued by Joel Ssenyonyi, the group’s Spokesperson.
The electoral reforms presented to Parliament consolidate a resolution by the ruling NRM decision to bar candidates from running independent of their party after losing a primary.
A set of the five reforms presented by the Attorney General, Mr William Byaruhanga, have major focus on independent candidates and how they qualify to run for office as President, Member of Parliament (MP) or district leader.
Candidates who seek for election as independents are required to produce evidence from their political parties confirming that they exited the party, at least one year before the nomination date.
The same provisions also apply to presidential candidates and those vying for district leadership.
“He (Museveni) always dismissed us as inconsequential, I’m glad he now realises that we’re a force to reckon with, hence his futile attempts to stop us,'” Mr. Ssenyonyi added.
The group early this week unveiled a team that will coordinate People Power activities ahead of the 2021 General elections.
Bobi Wine also owed that his political movement is stronger than President Museveni and his NRM party think.
Speaking at the function at his home in Magere, Kyadondo East in Wakiso District on Wednesday, Bobi Wine said the unveiling of the team is a testimony that People Power are a very organised group that can take the leadership of the country.
