ENTEBBE – President Yoweri Museveni on Sunday 30 received a special message from the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Ahmed Abiy
The Prime Minister’s Special Advisor, Mr. Girma Birru Geda, who is also the Ethiopian Ambassador to the United States of America, delivered the message to President Museveni yesterday at State House, Nakasero.
The President and the Ethiopian Envoy discussed matters of mutual interest between Uganda and Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian Ambassador to Uganda, Ms. Alemtsehay, among others, attended the meeting.
June last year, Uganda hosted Mr. Abiy for a two-day state visit, making it the first time for PM to be here.
The coming of Abiy was honoured by president Museveni who welcomed him to the state house Entebbe.
The two leaders discussed on bilateral and regional issues of common interest.
Mr. Abiy who was the chief guest at the Heroes Day celebrations due in Kakumiro was also awarded ‘The Pearl of Africa Grand Master’ Medal, the most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa medal, which is the highest accolade in the country.
This medal is said to be awarded to African heads of state that have made a contribution towards the independence struggle of the continent.
Mr. Abiy is well known for his efforts to settle disputes and misunderstandings between African countries with the most recent being Sudan with both the military rulers and the opposition group over the country’s political crisis.
Mr. Abiy’s meditation came amid the suspension of Sudan from all African Union activities until the military rulers hand over to the civilian-led authority.
Sudan conflicts had claimed over 100 lives after security forces stormed a weeks-long sit-in outside the military headquarters in Khartoum.
The protests forced the military to oust veteran president Omar al-Bashir in April.
The African Union, a continental body in which all 55 African countries are united on Thursday 6, June suspended the Republic of Sudan over its persistent violation.
During AU’s sitting on Thursday 6 in Addis Ababa, the African Union Peace and Security Council came out with the decision to officially kick out Sudan.
