KAMPALA – Kyadondo East MP Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine has threatened to quit the gentleman’s agreement with the People’s Government led by Dr Kizza Besigye over the choice of the presidential candidate for the 2021 elections, PML Daily has learnt.
In April, Bobi Wine’s People Power movement and Dr Besigye’s People’s Government announced that they would no longer attack one another and would instead unite against the common enemy, unseating President Yoweri Museveni come 2021.
However, this website has learnt that divisions between the two camps have emerged after the People’s Government in several meetings pestered him to leave the presidential candidature to Dr Besigye, arguing that the legislator is still politically immature.
Sources close to this engagement have intimated to PML Daily that the Besigye camp is comprised of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Mukono municipality MP Betty Nambooze, former Lubaga South MP John Ken Lukyamuzi, FDC president Patrick Amuriat Oboi and FDC national chairman Wasswa Biriggwa.
The People Power camp is led by Busiro East MP Medard Lubega Sseggona, Kassanda North MP Patrick Nsamba Oshabe, Bugiri Municpality MP Asumani Basalirwa and People Power spokesperson Joel Senyonyi.
However, sources added that despite meeting several times and the Besigye camp convincing Bobi Wine to give up the 2021 presidential dream, the Kyadondo East MP has insisted that 2021 is his chance.
“Nothing will stop Kyagulanyi. Those people in FDC have been trying to convince him to step down for Besigye as they prepare him for 2026 but he flatly rejected that proposal, saying that this is his time,” a source close to the negotiations told PML Daily.
“He doesn’t see himself in these things beyond 2021 if we don’t defeat Museveni. It’s either now or never because he says he is not interested in being a career politician,” the source added.
When contacted, Mr Joel Senyonyi, the spokesperson People Power, confirmed that they are talking with the People’s Government although he declined to divulge details.
“As People Power, we are in talks with all entities interested in change including Dr Besigye and People’s Government, ANT, DP-Block, Jeema and others. We hope to have a united front as we head to 2021,” Mr Senyonyi said.
Sources added that Bobi Wine’s camp has insisted to the Besigye’s camp that the latter is politically fatigued, having stood and lost four times to President Museveni.
“We are giving hope to oppressed Ugandans but the Besigye camp is really working to fail us. At this stage, no one is best suited to take on Museveni other than Bobi Wine,” the source from the People Power movement told this website.
The revelation is a setback to many political enthusiasts who have already called for a political alliance of opposition leaders to unseat the ruling NRM party.
In 2011, efforts by the opposition to unite under TDA did not last.
Bobi Wine’s People Power is currently working with the DP Bloc led by Norbert Mao and Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu’s newly formed Alliance for National Transformation.
However, in our next story, watch out for a revelation on the fate of the alliance.
