KAMPALA- Following reports about her state of mental instability, Grade one Magistrate Pamela Karamagi has been placed on leave for medical attention.
According to the August 8 statement by the Judiciary, the Magistrate often experiences illusions that make her feel extremely vulnerable.
“Her colleagues say she repeatedly says she gets dreams about people trying to physically attack her through cyber technology or that strange people keep following her everywhere with intentions of harming her,” reads an excerpt.
The Chief Registrar, Ms. Esta Nambayo, revealed that Ms. Karamagi was in November 2018 recalled from her Mbarara Chief Magistrate’s Court workstation back to headquarters in Kampala for close monitoring.
“There were numerous complaints that Her Worship Karamagi suffers from a yet to be determined condition and she could no longer perform her duties,” said Ms. Nambayo, her supervisor.
Mr. Pius Bigirimana, the Permanent Secretary/Secretary to the Judiciary, said Ms. Karamagi’s circumstances have been carefully discussed in Management.
“Our decision is to work with her family to assist her access psychosocial support service,” he said.
The statement further reads that her family informed the Judiciary that it sought some medical attention for her last year without much success.
“Ms. Karamagi recently documented her illusions in a letter addressed to the president of the Uganda Judicial Officers Association. In the letter, she strangely links her troubles to many people, including the Principal Judge, Dr. Yorokamu Bamwine,” reads the statement in part.
Adding that, “The Judiciary understands that Ms. Karamagi is undergoing a very difficult phase of her life and career. As such, we believe that sensationalizing or making fun of her circumstances may just escalate her condition. We are committed to supporting Ms. Karamagi to ensure that she resumes her duties.”
