KAMPALA — State Minister for Finance Evelyn Anite has Saturday, August 24 maintained that Government is full of mafias and that she will fight tooth and nail to expose them with the help of President Yoweri Museveni.
The minister who recently claimed that she has information that the mafia want to kill her amid a fall out in the administration and planned privatisation of government owned Uganda Telecom Ltd says that
Kawunkumi and Mafia are one and the same and that they will be named and cleaned out from Government.
“Not long ago H.E President Kaguta Museveni said there was Kawunkumi/Weavils in a certain Government institution. He sorted them. Kawunkumi and Mafia are one and the same. These too will be named and cleaned out from Government with the help and guidance of the President,” the minister said on social media.
Ms. Anite, who unsuccessfully sought for the removal of UTL administrator, also the Registrar General Mr. Bemanya Twebaze, and later sought to force through an audit of UTL, claimed that meetings have been held at URSB offices and Kampala Club, discussing her.
However, the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda dismissed the existence of mafia within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) regime describing the allegations as mere talk.
Rugunda said he’s not aware of the existence of any mafia group in the government of Uganda.
On Tuesday, Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana said he won’t reply to a ‘mad’ person as the war of words over the administration of the government owned Uganda Telecom Ltd rages.
“I can’t reply a mad person otherwise, I will be considered mad as well”
The Deputy AG is also quoted by the local weekly Observer Newspaper as saying: ” …if it occurred to her that I could be a murderer, then we should take her to Butabika to get her checked. Why would I murder a girl anyway?? I know how to put girls to some other good use.”

However Ms Anite, who was in Koboko Municipality MP, told the congregation that she has been facing enormous threats on her life due to her fight against corruption in the country.
“Some people are bleeding the country, they are robbing the country they are robbing the taxpayers of this country,” said Anite.
Minister Anite said: “We cannot do without the Lord in our lives and heart. As a young girl, my parents made sure I go to Sunday school, Scripture Union and received the Lord. Many people think that politicians do not go to church. But you must testify to God to defeat the devil.”
On the case of UTL, she said that the money belongs to government of Uganda because “President entrusted me to be Minister of Investment and I needed to monitor the money. But it is not easy to find out because the mafia is evil and wanted to rob Uganda six months ago.”
She said the challenges she is facing are occupational hazards which started in 2016.
“It is the fight against corruption and I call them mafia because they are robbing taxpayers and enriching themselves. When I chose the path to fight the corrupt, I chose the path to walk through fire,” she said.
