KAMPALA – Investment minister Evelyn Anite has recorded a statement with police in connection to what she claims are mafias after her life.
Addressing journalists on Monday, August 26, 2019, Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said they have started investigating the sources of death threats.
“Our team is currently pursuing several lines of inquiry to help approve or disapprove the claim of alleged death threats to her life by the perpetrators whom she mentioned,” said Mr Enanga.
“The public must know that as Police we take all forms of death threats seriously and we are prepared to expeditiously investigate this matter,” he added.
He revealed that the minister also gave some names of suspects to police but he refused to reveal them to journalists.
Mr Enanga added that they have since doubled Ms Anite’s security.
According to Police, all the characters that Ms Anite accuses will be summoned at a later stage of investigation to record statements.
Mr Enanga added that as part of the investigation, ,Ms Anite’s cell phones will be analysed by the ICT department to see who were the people tapping them especially when she made calls.
Addressing the press Monday morning at the Ministry of Finance headquarters in Kampala, Ms Anite said that there was a plan to remove her from the Uganda Telecom (UTL) battle and to end her life.
“The plan by the mafias is to take Anite out of the picture, I might die but history will judge them. You know the mafias, they are the ones who have been blocking the audit,” she said.
She, however, said that she would not stop fighting to save UTL or exposing bad characters in government.
“These mafias are not jokers. Go and ask Abiriga. I will die with my mouth open, I will die while shouting the mafias are coming, until they take me down. They are tapping my phone, I hear their voices when I pick up my phone.”
