
KAMPALA – The Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda has dismissed the existence of mafia within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) regime describing the allegations as mere talk.
Rugunda made the remarks on August 22, during Thursday’s plenary sitting in response to a question by Elijah Okupa (Kasilo County) to respond to reports by a cabinet member, Evelyn Anite, State Minister for Investment and Privatisation who alleged that there are mafia in government seeking to kill her for her role of an audit into the Uganda Telecom Limited (UTL).
Okupa asked, “Hon Prime Minister, can you assure this Country that you don’t preside over a mafia government?”
Rugunda replied saying, “Like Ndudgu Okupa, I have seen this in the media, however, I am not aware of the existence of any mafia group in the government of Uganda.”
Anite, addressed journalists on Monday at the headquarters of Ministry of Finance where she informed the country that a group of mafia are holding meetings and plotting to kill her and have gone as far as tapping her phone calls while monitoring all her moves.
