GULU – A 39-year-old Sudanese Police CID attached to Magwi County has on the morning of Saturday, September 14, died after a latrine collapsed on him from Kanyagoga a sub ward in Bardege Division Gulu Municipality.
The deceased Mr Daniel Deng Kul who was a tenant, had gone to ease himself in the latrine on Friday night at around 11:00 pm but he never returned to his house according to Mr Abraham Manyok, the deceased’s cousin brother quoting a statement from a young boy who resides in the victim’s house.
“Mr Deng left the young boy at 11:00 pm last night in the house and went to ease himself but never return and the boy felt asleep. This morning, a lady passing by latrine heard of a deep breathes inside and she came and peeped into the pit and saw he was struggling because the slap turned over him. She called the neighbors who tried to rescue him but when they removed him, he, unfortunately, pas on within less than a minute,” Mr Manyok narrated the ordeal
Mr Manyok said the deceased had just recently graduated from South Sudan Police training and was attached to Magwi County Police Station.
Ms Atoo Florence, the area LC1 of Konyagoga parish said the latrine which sunk with the South Sudanese national was in a very bad condition and was situated very near to a stream south of Gulu Gulu Army Secondary. She noted that so many people in Kanyagoga parish are unfortunately using latrines in very sorrowful states.
“We have very many homesteads still using latrines which are in very bad conditions and we shall soon carry out operations against homes without or with bad latrines, because such latrines are threats to lives especially during this rainy season,” Ms Atoo asserted.
Attempts by Police to rescue the situation were futile as the Aswa regional Fire Brigade team and SOCCO from Gulu CPS arrived late at the scene after the resident had already retrieved Deng from the pit.
Our website could not get a comment from Aswa river region Police spokesman as his phone was switched off. But the police who responded to the scene later transported the body to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem.
