BUVUMA – The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has set up a Crocodiles Exclusion Enclosure (CEE) at Yuwe Island in Nayilambi sub-county, Buvuma district.
This intervention is in response to the several crocodile attacks on the island.
Community members describe this island as a danger zone and have over the time called upon UWA to come in and protect them from these attacks.
On Monday, UWA completed the construction of the crocodile exclusion enclosure and also sensitized community members on safety tips and ways of avoiding crocodile-human attacks as a way of promoting human-wildlife coexistence.
Community leaders that include chairman LC3 and area local council councillors took part in the sensitization. They extended their appreciation to UWA for coming in to protect them from crocodile and hippo attacks.
Members also nominated able leaders to oversee activities around the CEE. The 10 selected members will be in charge of monitoring the general cleanliness of the CEE and also report any challenges that will emerge from time to time. They have been given the authority to discipline anyone who misuses it and also prevent children from accessing the water points. These members will also be engaged in sensitization activities on this Island. They will be trained before they begin this task.
