WAKISO — Kyadondo East MP Bobi Wine is in hiding after police raided a hotel in Kakiri, Wakiso where he and his team of coordinators were holding an evening meeting.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, had a organised a workshop with some of People Power coordinators in Kakiri- Wakiso District.
However, he said police at around 8:00PM launched a raid on his hotel, forcing him to flee into hiding.
People Power Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi said Bobi Wine has been forced to seek refuge from an unlawful night raid by police which has seen many of supporters, coordinators and colleagues swept up and detained while others were reportedly beaten.
In a statement on his social media, Bobi Wine said that at about 8:00pm, police and the military surrounded the hotel and stormed the meeting.
Bobi Wine said that police put off lights and declared the meeting illegal.
“Attempts by our lawyers to demand that they stop acting illegally fell on deaf ears. Well, they spent hours looking for me everywhere in the hotel without success. I’m told they are driving around the entire town looking for me! Some of our comrades are still surrounded, and we are doing everything to ensure their safety,” he said adding that “Such actions of impunity only strengthen our resolve to fight injustice and impunity. You can imagine the situation we’re in, to see that a citizen cannot hold a meeting in a hotel.”
“The DPC said that if we were holding a wedding meeting or drinking party, they would have had no problem with us. What is illegal is meeting to discuss the future of our country!!! We have a duty to deliver this country from the abyss.
Ssenyonyi has called the raid “a clear and brazen act of targeted political repression by the authorities aimed at violating Bobi Wine’s human rights”.
